Fans of bracing, pure, steely Riesling can find lots to enjoy in the Finger Lakes these days, as this Tasting Highlights demonstrates. Both established and new operations are helping to drive quality in this upstate region, which now stands as clearly the most dynamic and quality-driven of New York's major wine-producing areas.
The newest member of the Finger Lakes' elite is Paul Hobbs' Hillick & Hobbs, which debuted in the 2019 vintage, The current 2022 release adds to the consistent track record and established house style here, offering a pure and sleek style, with yellow apple and white peach notes laced with a flash of quinine through the finish.
Among the long-established names, under the hand of Fred Merwath, Hermann J. Wiemer contributes a set of outstanding bottlings. Ravines’ trio of Rieslings are worth tracking down. Also of note is the new look Keuka Spring Vineyards, where winemaker Dan Bissell is crafting some tasty offerings from the winery's 21 acres of Riesling.
